It may not weigh that much, but it's weight off the front end which is where you need to remove it.
Yes mine is pretty much all stock and you are probably right the factory engine cover would be a buffer as opposed to guys running CAI's with no cover.
And SRT6 Dan you are right removing the gasket would get some air flowing under there, I remember back in the "old days" guys would adjust there hood hinges up as far as possible to create a homemade cowl induction
