Only thing with that pawl is that as far as the transmission is concerned "Park" and Neutral" are the same gear, only difference is that pawl. It's a pin that's about 1/8" in diameter that holdss your 3100lb car still. Best practice is to have foot on service brakes, engage the parking brake, then shift into "Park" so that pin sees as little shearing force as possible.
