In Texas A/C is a down right necessity in the summers and one has only to deal with replacing the cab air filter rather than paying an A/C shop 100 bucks an hour to tear apart your dash just to clean the evaporator coil.
Settin in traffic in 100 degree heat with a froze up evaporator will make one bless the day someone came up with a means to filter the air before dirt, dust, dander and dog hair plugs up the coil.

Stogie, isn't the evaporator on the engine side of the firewall. It seems to me that the air flow comes from the outside over the evaporator coil and then through the cabin filter entering the interior. The only way you could get dog hair in the filter would be if the dog was in the engine compartment or the fan is running in reverse.
I'm not being a smart *** (this time) about it, but are you sure about the air flow direction.
