I agree that you have to compare apples with apples and oranges with oranges. I read a comparison of pickup trucks that didn't include the new Toyota Tundra because it just came out. I would certainly want to check out the Toyota first before buying anything.
I bought a 2008 Outlook even though the Acura MDX came out as a better vehicle because the Outlook had more room in it and was quite a bit less expensive. The part that I like about any of the publications is that at least the articles give you a starting point from which you can make a choice. They also may include a make and model you hadn't even considered.
Some years ago Consumers Reports were really brutal on their ratings of most domestic cars and rightfully so. Most were inferior to the imports. I think we can thank them for keeping the pressure on to improve quality to where the domestic cars have for the most part closed the quality gap.
