Well, the shifter is a little different than the shifter you'd find connected to a Tremec.

On a Tremec like you find on a mustang, the lever is actually attached to the transmission. The XF has a parallelogram linkage that pushes and pulls on the main shift rod. Then there is a selector cable that's activated when you go left to right, along with a reverse lockout box.

The selector is very short throw (the left/right motion on the shifter between 1-2, 3-4, and 5-6) but you are right, there is room for work on getting the shifter to move a shorter distance front to back.

The solution unfortunately isn't a "stopper", as the shift distance is necessary to move the synchros from one gear to another. Stopping the shift "short" would cause grinding or incomplete engagement.

What's necessary is to basically increase the lever arm between the shifter and the main shift rod/fork. It's possible. Maybe some enterprising fellow can engineer one.
