c. Switch the Fan switch to ON or RUN

What your describing is destratification of the house. The fan mixes the hot air up stairs with the other levels and the tstat corrects for the temp.

Woody AXim: The thermostat is a very inconsiderate lover, satisfies himself (herself to be PC ) and goes to sleep.
By running the lower powered fan the whole house air mass is mixed so that you dont have the momma bear baby bear and Poppa bear temperature differences of 4 -6 degrees per level.
The fan only runs a bit now with the stat and the air never is stirred, try it , like it and then write how it worked for you and your differences so that others can benefit...........
