Excellent way to track down a problem!

I think that whoever designed that throttle body feedback potentiometer did a crappy job. I would never put a potentiometer in an engine bay environment. I would have gone with an optical sensor, like computer mice use on their wheels. With that inside of a sealed unit, you would NEVER have the issue that you did.
