The tape idea is brilliant

. However, I would not use fishing line, casue it is strong enough to scratch the paint. I had success with DENTAL FLOSS. Of course I live in AZ and it gets hotter than H-E-double hockey sticks. So i'm sure that loosened up the sticky stuff on the back.
I took off the letters earlier this year and my car is a 2004. So the letters were on there for 4 years and after removal, you could not even tell they were there. Left no marks or different color paint (and my car is white).
To remove the sticky stuff I used GOO GONE and a tissue. Soaked the tissue and held it to the sticky stuff. After the entire process, I definitely gave the car a GOOD WAX.
