Mercedes was not exactly known for number one in reliability just a few years back. You have to remember that a lot of the early Crossfires and SRTs were built with old left over parts, all of them may have some left over parts in them. So you kind of have to expect something to go wrong. Good thing about the odometer is that it is completely seperate from the other systems in the car, so he won't lose the tune.
It is basically a self contained unit. I think it was going to happen sonner or later and the battery disconnect just pushed it forward. If it were to lose all of the memory it would've reset to 0 and it didn't.
If anyone starts ripping into these early cars you will see tons of mismatched parts all over the place. Wrong brackets, different motor mounts, odd bolts, missing pieces, exhaust hangers off of an 89 E series, etc... It's amazing the differences in each car. From all the Crossfires I have worked on, no two were the exact same. It makes it that much more interesting to work on.
