Thanks for the info. I can follow the argument on the belt as a cause since I would imagine if the belt tension is off ever so slightly that I'm hering the noise as inconsistently as I have.
By belt dressing you mean checking the tension on the belt?

Belt dressing is a spray (commonly used on new belts before installing)
It will temporarily stop an old belt from squeeling for a short time, at least long enough to diagnose.
You do have to be careful not to get it on other parts, just the belt.
If you do change out the belt look for the Goodyear Gatorback belt - it seems to run quieter and it supposed to slip less.
