As it was explained to me when I bought my 2005 about 2 months ago - the extended powertrain warranty is not like the 3 yr/36,000 mi warranty - it is only available to the first registered private owner of the vehicle.

My XF wasn't put into service until 2006, and was never sold to a private party, so I was able to get the extended powertrain warranty.
