This method has worked well for me and I've caught about a dozen or so mice every year and have seen no signs of them in my car.
Had a mouse roaming around my bedrooms a few nights ago. So I baited a claim shell type trap with peanut butter and placed it in my spare bedroom/hide the mess behind a closed door room. The trap wasn't sprung over the last couple of nights so earlier this evening I grabbed the trap to put it away, figuring the mouse was long gone. Discovered that the mouse had eaten the peanut butter without tripping the trap. Tonight I'm putting out a glue trap.
