Makes sense. The grill flaps are curved upwards, so from the front, you can't see the radiator. Keeps the bugs off the radiator, I guess.

I'm not surprised that removing the grill increases the efficiency of the radiator, but I am surprised by the amount!

Have you thought about putting some kind of mesh there instead?
