The cloth material is foam backed. The foam is breaking down and releasing form the adhesive holding it to the headliner pan. You are correct with your material observations but I bought my crossfitre new and it has never been steam cleaned. This is premature failure of the headliner that all coupe owners ae going to deal with sooner or later.
