It does not feel loose as such.

If I am sat at the lights with 50% lock on waiting for them to change I can move the steering wheel 1" without the wheels changing direction. It's weird.

Yes, it's the first non rack and pinion steering I have had on a car. I have never thought that this set-up gives as much feel and if the dead band is normal I am amazed.
