Tranny will shift on it's own when you are in manual mode. While in manual mode the trans will tend to keep the gear you have selected until it decides it's time to shift.
Yes you can downshift but again, the trans will decide when it's safe to do so. For instance, if you are going 100mph and toggle into 1st gear the trans will proceed to downshift one gear at a time when rpm's reach an allowable level. This keeps your car from killing its self!

Found out yesterday that if you hold the shift lever to the left rather than toggle it through the gears, the tranny will downshift gear by gear automatically!

You need to get out more! I usually dream of chicks (the wingless kind)!
