The 2-piece driveshaft is a cost-cutting measure.
A single-piece driveshaft would have two u-joints, one at the transmission and one at the differential.
The 2-piece driveshaft only has one u-joint, and the connections at the transmission and differential are basically just blocks of rubber.
As a piece of trivia, the blocks of rubber are called "Guibos"
