The 3000GT VR-4 was on par with the other Japanese super cars of the 90's (RX-7, 300ZX and Supra). At the time, it was one of the most advanced automobiles on the market. AWD, all wheel steering, active aero system, TT V6 good for 300+hp.
They were expensive to work on, no doubt, but so are the 300ZX and Supra. **** go work on an RX-7 for Christ's sake. See you after the "rotary specialist" rapes you.

Neither was the Crossfire, so its relative. I'd say the popularity compared to its merc counterpart is very close to the stealth/3000gt.
