Unmodified, the EVO and the STi are a close race. It depends on who you ask (an EVO owner or an STi owner) which is faster. They both seem to have their own religious zealot-type followers and fan-boys. A friend of mine is an STi fan-boy, so I get to hear about how all of the car magazines have been shamelessly pumping the EVO over the STi and how the STi is classes above the EVO, blah blah blah. What I get out of it is that Mitsubishi is greasing more palms at the magazines than Subaru.
While I appreciate that they are both quick and perform quite well, I still say they're both uglier than a mud fence.
