My opinion is that foreign car imports shouldn't be discouraged at all - American car companies should be allowed to compete in a free market economy without external price pressures.

Import Tariffs, Federal Bailouts, etc. all lead to the same problem: American car companies making mediocre vehicles. American car companies not leading in performance, quality, fuel economy, or anything else. American car companies not streamlining production and lowering costs. Americans not making vehicles that customers want and will sell off the lots.

In my opinion, automakers should be building on pull-and-flow systems with automated ordering systems at car dealerships and vastly improved car delivery systems. A single automobile should be able to be ordered and delivered to a dealership in less than a month. The dealership should then drive the car to the customer's home to complete the sale. Manufacturing should use less labor and more automation and car model offerings should be reduced to a minimal number of platforms per manufacturer. With less old stock on the lots, car manufacturers can phase in improvements within weeks rather than months. Recalls will involve hundreds of cars rather than tens of thousands of them. Warranty work will involve shipping customer cars to factory regional "servicing centers" where repairs are done with a centralized, consistent, well-trained staff and parts distribution center.
