The other way to check the engine oil is via the trip odometer reset button feature.
You can find this in the owners manual, in the section - Understanding Your Instrument Panel - in the Oil Level indicator Light section.

- Hop in your car.
- Turn ignition key to the run position, but do not start the engine.
- Press the Trip Odometer Reset Button (left of Speedometer) once, and release.
- Wait about seven seconds, and the trip odometer will change to an oil symbol.
- Press and release the Trip Odometer Reset Button (left of Speedometer) twice within 1 second, and the main Odometer readout will then display a message.

HI

If the readout is OK, you do nothing.
If it's low, you should read your owners manual on how to add oil to the engine, and what type of oil you need to buy.
If it is HI, you need to take the car to a shop to get them to remove enough.

I HIGHLY recommend that you read your owners manual, and open the hood of the car, and learn to identify the various components of your car. In my opinion, EVERYONE who drives a car should know how to do the following tasks without asking for help on any vehicle they drive on a regular basis:

- Check the engine oil level.
- Check the automatic transmission fluid level (if the car has a dipstick for the transmission)
- Check the coolant level.
- Check the brake fluid level.
- Check the washer fluid level.
- Know how to add more oil, brake, coolant, and washer fluid to their car.
- Check the tire pressure.
- Know how to inflate their tires, and what pressure it needs to be at.

These are items that keep the car safe to drive, and it is surprising how many people don't know how to do these simple operations, and/or neglect these items on their cars.
