Default Re: Finally Someone Raced Me!! SRT-6 vs Lancer Evo

Evo VIII, original owner. I bought one of those GTechs a while back for my own curiosity to compare. My take away was that bone stock to bone stock they're within a couple tenths in a straight line. If it's really cold out the Evo edges out. North of 50 degrees and the SRT6 seems to have a little advantage. I think on the street where the SRT can take advantage is when the Evo is caught flat on boost, meaning revs below 2500. It either means losing a beat until the revs pick up or dropping down a gear -- either way giving up ground. So in a roll-on the Evo is probably off boost in second, and isn't going to be able to make up the initial car length it then gives up to the SRT at anything near sane speeds. Funny thing though with Evo mods -- many of them fatten the power curve up top at the expense of the bottom end -- meaning they (initially) do even worse in a roll-on unless they know its coming and have already downshifted. That is the Evo's achilles heal.

FYI, re that sound you heard from the Evo. There's a little restrictor piece after the turbo that most tuners remove when they modify peak boost to eliminate the boost taper-off on the factory mapping. It's not a pop off or blow-off valve as it doesn't dump the boost, but it does restrict it. Evos whistle a bit once its removed.
