xviiviexie, you basically have to ask yourself three key questions:

1) Do I want to "do it myself" or do I want to buy an "off the shelf" product (includes everything as well as instructions)?

2) Do I want the engine bay to appear as close to stock as possible or do I want a custom appearance?

3) Do I want one pipe or two?

Here's a quick break-down of the most popular intakes:

NeedsWings CAI: off the shelf, custom appearance, one pipe (also, probably the most popular cold air intake) $450 (www.needswings.com)

Mercedes SL55 Intake: sorta DIY, stock appearance, two pipes. Sorry, I don't know how much it costs.

According to people's track times and dynos there is no appreciable difference between the NeedWings CAI and the Merc SL55 setup. So both of those are great performance choices.

Code3 Intake Mod (not really a cold air intake): of the shelf, stock appearance, two pipe (has two but doesn't really use them) As a note on this one, it isn't really a CAI, it opens up the back of the stock intake right where the two pipes meet, and puts a filter there, basically avoiding all of the restrictions of the stock intake, but it also sucks in hot air from behind the motor. I have no performance info on this, good or bad. So it's best to ask Code3 or search the forum on it.

TVT Design's intake is pretty new, and I haven't read up on it. So I can't really say anything about it. It's worth checking out though. I could be wrong, but it looks like Tony (TVT) put together an off-the-shelf version of the SL55 intake.

There are several forum members who have put together their own CAI's from the ground up. Some look fabulous (who has the twin pipe chrome job?) some are all-go no-show (wrapped with insulating tape). There's a huge variety of the DIY stuff. So your best bet is to surf the gallery and ask the person how they did it. I seem to remember someone here with a DIY job told me it cost them less than $100 for parts and that included two K&N filters!
