When a wheel gets cracked/bent, it due to the tire compressing to the point that there's nothing left to compress and the wheel takes the hit. Using carbon fiber in the sidewalls of the F1's, not only does it help with the handling, it also adds a strong resistance to being crushed by a sharp edge of concrete.
