When internet retail became popular, they blamed the internet for soft brick and mortar store sales. This year, the news didn't say anything about the internet but chose to blame the economy. On the radio news I heard (several times), the vey next story was how Amazon had their best Christmas ever. I did 95% of my Christmas shopping online.
Economies are changing - and pretty rapidly. Retail is collapsing slowly around us, and clearly online stores are making a killing by being cheaper. Mind you, they have very sharp practices which border on illegality here.

– Made to work a compulsory 10˝hour overnight shift at the end of a five-day week. The overnight shift, which runs from Saturday evening to 5am on Sunday, means they have to work every day of the week.

Staff at Amazon, the online shopping giant, say it pressured them to drop their trousers for a mass mooning photograph as a response to last weekend’s report in The Sunday Times about arduous working conditions at its Marston Gate warehouse in Bedfordshire.
Another source said: “They were sending the supervisors to try to persuade people on a one-to-one basis. It’s ludicrous and a lot of the staff are upset about it.” More than 200 staff were eventually photographed – but waving to the camera instead of mooning.
I don’t know how employment laws operate in the US, but here in the UK this could land the company in deep trouble.
