Well thanks for all your help. It seems the consensus is that leaving the salt on is bad, but maybe not as bad as a car wash unless your 100% confident of that car wash.

It's been below freezing for a long time, so I can't rinse it as I've done previous years. This weekend it will be in the 50's. If my frozen pipe isn't too bad, I'll be busy.
