Finally my cup holder broke too and will not stay down ...I did consider many solutions (I particular liked the sledgehammer approach by on of the authors!) ...but in the end fixed it in 30 seconds.
As I didn't find the cup holder usedfull AT ALL anyway. I simply bent e 1/2" piece of thin flat metal to about 110 degrees angle, then pushed one end up between the silver top and the release botton and eased it down.
The metal now functions as a spring and hold the devise effectively down. Problem solved!
I then bought a $10 foldout cupholder on eBay and also constructed a non-windscreen iPhone holder (navigation) ...can upload pics if anyone is interested.
2 Q's: The umbrella holder ...have you actually found an umbrella that fits there?
and 2: What is the strap on the top back on the passenger seat for?
