I think the biggest reason for a removable hardtop being offered for a roadster, is for those people who live in the colder climates, and have to drive their cars year round.
Putting the hardtop on when the bad weather hits would help protect the convertible top from all of winters nastiness.
But now a days, (with the way the tops are designed) you probably do more permanant harm to your fabric top by keeping it folded up for 5 months than you would if you just went ahead and drove it thru the winter.
