Trouble for a 'thank you'? I mean I was always taught common courtesy as it seems you were. I always say thank you, its just polite, like you said. That is crazy. I would love to have that conversation on video:

-"Here is your ticket, you need to slow down"
-"Thank you, sir"
-"What did you just say to me?"
-"Thank you, sir"
-"Are you getting smart with me, there is no need for you to let your smartass mouth run like that. I'm just doing my job. I oughta take you in for pissing me off."
-"Thank you, sir"
-"There you go again letting your mouth go. You'd better zip it up before i zip your face across this pavement"
-"..."
-"What nothing to say?"
