Shouldn't be the battery should it? Should be powered by the alt while running. If the alt is being over tasked it wouldn't be able to charge the battery and then your electrical system might suffer but I'd expect to hear this problem a lot if the alt's aren't very powerful.
Maybe it's just that your alt is failing?
