I have never noticed any such noises coming from mine. I had a truck once that had too much slack in the read end. When you shifted into D, you'd hear a loud clunk a bit later as the slack was taken up. Any drivetrain is going to have some slack in it, but I'd say if it enough to cause any noticeable noises, it's not normal.
