Sorry to hear about your accident.
I can say that one of the best things I have done (for safety) was to add a third brake light flasher.
It really does get the attention of the drivers behind you.
Very cheap insurance. I know it is working because most drivers seem to stop much further back than they used to - do not know why they add distance but hey it helps.
I bought an adjustable one off of ebay - you can set the number of flashes and the flash duration. Easy install.
