Having a spare is not particularly a safety issue but either way the comments that you have heard are about the size of it.
Sports car - Sports flair - No spare
Little Trunk - no room - for spare
Cross country - not the car for it - no need for a spare
I have a can of slime for the emergency need or as one post stated keep a quick repair kit with you and voila you are on your way!
