everything should fall into place

make sense?
Sorry that's a little hard to follow and could be misleading.

The wires on the harness plug bought for this purpose connect to the wires on the new head unit harness. They're color coded but make sure the colors on the new head unit really mean the same thing as the colors on the harness - see my web site.

That gives you a head unit with a plug.

That makes it possible for the new head unit to plug into the harness plug in car. This enables unplugging new head unit from the car without unwiring.

It's a lot easier to connect the wires on the new plug to the wires on the head unit sitting at a table with good lighting, than crouched next to the car with the head unit flopping around on the console or seat while you connect the wires.

The rear leads that come out of the new head unit should not be connected to the new harness plug - instead these can be left available for wires going to new rear speakers.

You could put connectors on the rear speaker wires coming out of the head unit to make it easier to remove the head unit, again so you don't have to unwire.
