rob that's a shame. The guy I go to also has to drill a hole in the side of the door and he plugs it. Its where the latch is and unless you know what you are looking for you'd think it was put there by the factory. I suggest finding a high end dealer in your area, Mercedes, Porsche, Jag and ask them who does their ding work. Sounds like you got someone that didn't know what they were doing. 100$ bucks a ding is pretty much standard. I also had this guy fix hail damage on my old PT Cruiser and his work was flawless. Over 20 dings and he got all of them out.
