I do believe the tow hooks are used to tie down the car during the boat trip and on the car carriers. I have not witnessed a Crossfire, but many other European cars use the same kind of hooks for just that purpose. I think the tow truck driver was just being over cautious.

Paint the rear hook flat black and you will not notice it anymore.
