Proud new owner of a 2007 Crossfire Coupe
On Saturday, April 18th I drove my "Old Man's Corvette" (1995 Lexus SC400) down to Big Valley Dodge in Van Nuys. I was attracted to their full
page ad in the Los Angeles times for Crossfires at 50% off sticker. I had called an old friend who I worked for at Magic Ford Resale in Santa Clarita, who was a sales manager there. By luck, Lou found the one and only Coupe he had in Aero Blue with a six speed! That was it! After the boring luxury of my SC400 which handled so superbly that I beat knee dragging kids on "Rice Rockets" at their own cornering games up on Angeles Crest I grew tired of the monotony of the auto slush tranny. So there I was, Locking myself into
the cozy cockpit (with a great deal of trouble setting the latch - a German sadist must of designed this !) I just sold my "83 280ZX 2+2 last summer - it was a a love-hate relationship over 16 years, with 3 5spd trannys and constant cash being funneled into it. When I finally got the Crossfire onto
an open stretch of road in Woodley Park I was able to unleash this screaming Banshee of an engine and tranny with wild overrevs between gears, an old smile spread across my face! This is the most fun you can have with your Depends on! I'm a young 67 but this Fisher-Price car on steroids made me feel a whole lot younger. I drove back to the dealership and signed on the dotted line! $20,716.92 out the door with 61 miles on the odo 3yr/36k bumper to bumper and a lifetime warranty on the power train-they might live to regret that part of the contract! This car could make me live long enough to see an engine and tranny replacement. I was given the wrong spare key (I ended getting 3!) I was racking my brain trying to set the radio for a day or to when I realized I had the Optimus with Nav which
needs a separate manual. After a few days they found a well thumbed one. I would like to get a CD stacker for the boot...The CD's seem to get pretty
warm in the dash. I took my girlfriend for a terrorizing ride through Little Tujunga and Boquet Canyon! My love and appreciation for this sweet handling little coupe grew with each rush to the apex of the next curve...I averaged about 20mpg on this trip but naturally the engine is tight and thats about the same around town my SC400 does and I did flog it a bit.
I had a couple of experiences where after pumping gas the whole dash and ignition went dead-no dash idiot lights, no nothing. I turned the ignition key back and forth and it finally came back to life and started! What's up with that? I'm hoping that this isn't a quirky bit of German engineering....
The compliments have been grudgingly given by some envious neighbors, but
the only one that has to be impressed is me...and I'm thoroughly smitten!
P.S. It's a 2007!
Yours Truly,
MAC
