Go ahead and change the damper because it's cheap and easy to do. I bought the SLK damper. Also check the wheel bearings because I made the mistake of thinking it was only the damper and it ended up costing me $1500 for the bearing, hub and labor.
Would a 2003 SLK damper do the trick? I am going to order it and maybe swap it out in my next oil change.
