For auto crossing I wanted to get wider wheels.
I wanted 18" wheels so I could rotate the wheels front to rear. Balance the wear out due to racing front to rear...
I wanted to pull back from slicks as I get a 3% penality for using them and they are costly dudes.
Went on Ebay and found a set of wheel from a mercedes that were 8.5" wide, by 18". The price was right at about $800 for the set - shipped.
Got them Monday, started to add them. Had ordered hubcentric spacers at 10mm and they worked fine on the rear. We can not use hubcentric spacers on the front, I did but, had to do lots of cheating to get there.
The wheels were about 33mm offset, I would like to have 4x mm offset so that no spacers would be required. Basically the tires are 245 x 40 x 18's and do not hit under hard cornering. THe rear plastic shields are close and I heated them up and pushed them toward the rear of the car ( smooshed toward the cabin ).
Car handles a lot like the slicks but are street legal and saves me from so many tire changes, I hope. Now have 6 sets of tire and wheels, phew, may need new hubs soon due to wear.
This is just to let you know what is possible for better handling. Enjoy, Woody
