SLK's have a FIREWALL to keep engine heat away from the whole battery when you park the car with a hot engine. YES! But not Crossfires!
Inside my dying battery I could see that ONLY the FRONT CELL was ALL WHITE from sulphation due to repeated self-discharge caused by parked engine heat reaching the front cell.
******I have now wedged a wad of white cortell wadding (out of a speaker box) in front of my new battery.******
PS: The only cure for one flat cell would have been to drill through the top plastic into the first metal link, and charge only that front cell - I lacked the courage to drill.
Please heat-insulate your battery asap !
I checked the temperature of the battery today after the car had sat for one hour after a 30 mile drive and the case was at 110 deg. Seven hours later it was at 95 deg.
Chrysler found that putting the battery in the trunk gave an average of 8 months extra life to the battery.
