I think the trick is NOT to make it from a dark material. Or from too open a mesh. Having it either polished or bright will help a great deal.
I remember from a long time ago, some one made a grill out of honeycomb mesh. Satin Black, and it looked terrrible for just the reason you stated. I already made a recessed mesh SST grill-the final weld pulled in the lower lateral curves too much and it wouldn't fit just right. It's sitting in my garage as we pound keyboards.
Looked great (except for not fitting!) and you couldn't see the hardware behind it.
