I fully agree with what Danimal told you about the tires.
I've got "Coopers" and I've been very happy with them and only paid a little more than $600 for them too.
A good friend paid $600 for a set a Good Years as well, so do shop around and look for the best price, no matter what you buy.
Oh and by the way, you can count on your Dad wanting to borrow your car. If he put his car away for safe keeping, he's going to have a terrible time keeping his hands off yours.
