Report: Visit at the Karmann-Plant in Osnabrück/Germany - 07-09-2006 , 05:54 AM
Hello folks!
First, I hope that this is the right place for that post, but I just wanted to give a little report from a recent visit at the Karmann-Plant in Osnabrück, where the Chrysler Crossfire is built (beside the Mercedes CLK and the Audi A6 convertible). About 26 Crossfire-owners from all over Germany and even one from Chechia met early at the 27th of June and at 09:30 the tour started with a visitation of the little but fine museum of Karmann (they are famous for the Karmann Ghia, but in the past, they built a lot of other cars, like the porsche 356, some bmw, the old and the new beetle conv., vw scirocco, corrado and others). They have 15,000 employees (all over the world, even in the States), if I remember that number right. Then, we all went through the large factory halls where and had a chance to be VERY close to the production line (we even could touch all the parts and speak to the workers, very interesting). We walked through the production line and could see every detail of our beloved car. Did you know, that the stabilizing underconstruction of the bonnet is GLUED to the bonnet itself? At 12:00 the guided tour was over and we all were still amazed by all the new XF that could be seen in all different stages of production - from a sheer steel sheet to the ready, painted car, that goes off to a text-box where it is driven up to 100 miles/h. BTW: We were told there, that the production will definitely end in the end of 2007 or in 2008! So the we all left with mixed feelings, heading for a little overland cruise to a small town near Osnabrück. The bad numbers in selling result in the fact that they only built 17 cars per day (!). Most of them are for the US market (you can tell them by other running-lights, red in the rear and orange in the front, the European cars have orange ones in the back - ugly - and white ones in the front) first. They built nearly 200, which is also not too much compared to other mainline-cars. Interesting: much handcrafted work is used to built up the crossfire, so most of the welding is not done by robots. It is done by the workers, which is good for quality, I guess. We were not allowed to take any pictures in the plant for obvious reasons (hey, where is the spy?). So here are just some pics of the meeting before and after. So, if anyone of you ever comes to Germany (north-west) in the near future, try to plan a trip to Osnabrück. Mrs. Schlesiger (kschlesiger@karmann.de) will provide you information that is necessary to take part in the this highly interesting tour. But you should make out a date very early because they have a lot of visitors.
Regards, jens
Edit: no chance to post pics. I will do that later.
