Check to see if the seller listed the Subaru on cars.com -- premium listings on cars.com include a free Carfax report.

My used XF had been in a minor accident before I bought it, and I found it on the dealer's cars.com listing by clicking on the "free Carfax report" link. I used that info to get a full set of new Contis installed for free!
