No - the old XF key will not work because it was laser cut to the old car ignition switch. The battery is still transferable. The key is customer cut (based on VIN) and then you program it to talk to the car.

As far as hiding the VIN, that has been discussed before. Most legitimate dealers will ask for proof of ownership, but some parts counter nitwits will just order the key. So, there is some risk that someone could spend $140 to get a key made to steal your car, if the car is outside and accessible. Since I keep mine garaged, I decided the risk was low and did not put a piece of black electrical tape over the VIN on the windshield.
