It's really kind of annoying that MB vehicles require the multiplexer to make it work. That thing costs a lot of money, but it's basically just a custom programmable bidirectional serial interface. The extra cables are simply there for compatibility purposes.

There's a lot of COTS hardware that could serve the same purpose without costing an arm and a leg.
