Yes, the best bang-for-the-buck is separating the cooling systems.

Insulating the intercooler from engine bay temps will help prevent heat build up with all applications.

For longer runs (street, highway, Auto-X, Texas Mile, etc..) the more fluid you can add circulating in the system, the larger you can make the surface area of your HE and more you can increase the rate of fluid flow (IC pump) - - then the greater the medium for heat transfer. Not huge gains - but it does help.

For 1/4 mile runs - I think the best setup would be to isolate the heat exchanger from the IC system with a set of bypass valves, install a custom flow tank as close as you can to the intercooler, ICE down the coolant and run the pump just prior to staging. This would give you the best chance of lowering your IAT's for short runs (10 - 15 seconds) when the blower is at full speed.

On a hot day at the drag strip, the HE will just as effectively heat up your ice cold fluid prior to staging (if not better due the temperature differential) as it would dissipate heat from IC fluid. I found this out on a hot day after supercooling my IC fluid with dry ice and monitoring my IAT gauge.
