If you were to take a brand new engine, add oil to the full level on the dip stick, then run the engine and recheck the oil level, I am sure that you would have to add oil to bring it back up to the full level again.
Not all of the oil would drain when the plug was removed as oil would be adhering to the inside of the engine, inside the oil ways, hydraulic lifters and in small puddles throughout the engine etc. I am sure that a pint of oil could easily be left inside the engine in this manner.
You may put in 8.5 qts at first but you would not put that in the next time.
