I've only replaced mine once, but found it easier to just remove the clip because it seemed to be in the way a bit when it was just unclipped on one side and pushed to the other side. It removes easy with a needle nose pliers by compressing the clip a bit. Yes, you do run the risk of losing it. After seeing how it all goes together the first time, I will probably just swing it to the side as you do. Either way, it's not really all that hard!
