My theory....the SL55 box or even the stock boxes can fit more air in them (without there block filters) in the same length as the 3" NW pipe can, SO if you just add 3" piping to the box it and pair it with dual pods it should technicaly be able to carry more air then the dual 3" pipe set up.
Without the filters installed in the box - you might be right for the stock airboxes. The stock filters sit less then an 2/16th of an inch from the bottom of the box, requiring most of the air to pass thru the side of the filter.
Stock SRT6 airbox and filter
SRT6 airbox with a credit card betwen the filter and the box
SL55 Intake with a K&N filter
SL55 Intake box w/ K&N filter and credit card
The filter in the SL55 airbox sits about 1/2 inch from the bottom - providing freer, more even airflow around the entire filter.
I've seen some N/A guys use a similar setup to your idea with the factory airbox - but never seen it done with a stock SRT6 intake.
The radiator support openings are squeezed down in size with the factory plastic feeds. I remember someone dynoed with the Stock SRT6 intake but removed the plastic intake hoses and gained considerable HP (with the hood open)
I say the best test is to dyno a dual NW and a SL55 (w/K&N filters) back to back with clean filters and the OEM grill mounted in place. A bench flow doesn't test both intakes under the normal operating conditions of the engine. IMO they both come out ptretty close. Then take a sawsall and enlarge the driver side passs thru to a full 3" and run em agian.
That would be a fair test.
